PAPAYA RED LADY DWARF FH-50
At 3 to 4 pounds, the “Red Lady” papaya (Carica papaya “Red Lady”) is a high-yielding Mexican variety that can produce 50 to 120 fruits per plant each season. A semi-dwarf variety, it grows 20 to 30 feet tall and thrives in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 9a to 11.
Plant “Red Lady” papaya shrubs in full sun on a mound or slope against a building that provides wind protection and reflected heat. Papayas thrive in a light, well-drained soil that is moist in hot weather and dry in cooler temperatures. Space plants 8 to 10 feet apart if growing more than one.
Water the shrub every other day or every day during the hottest weather when no rain falls. Cut back on watering during cooler weather. Papaya plants are susceptible to root rot, so thoroughly water the soil but don’t let water pool around the plant.
